Texas Roadside Oddities

Not much internet access lately. We're in New Mexico now, but here are some photos from our drive across TX.

Cadillac Ranch, in a field by the interstate.
BYO spray paint encouraged. These two were speaking Italian, I think they had just finished the "Italia Route 66" above.

Route 66

Coming across western OK and into eastern TX there are a few bits of old Route 66 left. The most spectacular one we came across is this beautiful former gas station, now turned visitor center, in Shamrock, TX. The pictures don't do justice to it.

It is fully restored inside, with a great pressed tin ceiling and a few exhibits and old photos. You can sit in the immaculate diner booths and enjoy free coffee and wifi. Outside we ran into another couple traveling in a Scamp trailer and compared notes.

We spent the night at a campground in McClellan National Grasslands, outside of Alanreed, TX. Not much grass to be seen, lots of rolling scrubby hills that were pretty in an austere way. The wind was howling - buffeting the parked trailer, hard to walk into.

Well, we're off!

After a few hiccups the first day out (dead battery, constant rain, heaviest while setting up camp), we had a quiet restful night in Big Hill Pond state park in western TN. Woke up to a beautiful morning to cross the Mississippi and drive to North Little Rock, AR. We are sitting in a crowded RV park right on the bank of the Arkansas river, with the Clinton presidential library across the water. Next to the park is a walking bridge across the river, perfect to watch the sunset over the city.
