Coming across western OK and into eastern TX there are a few bits of old Route 66 left. The most spectacular one we came across is this beautiful former gas station, now turned visitor center, in Shamrock, TX. The pictures don't do justice to it.
It is fully restored inside, with a great pressed tin ceiling and a few exhibits and old photos. You can sit in the immaculate diner booths and enjoy free coffee and wifi. Outside we ran into another couple traveling in a Scamp trailer and compared notes.
We spent the night at a campground in McClellan National Grasslands, outside of Alanreed, TX. Not much grass to be seen, lots of rolling scrubby hills that were pretty in an austere way. The wind was howling - buffeting the parked trailer, hard to walk into.
